Biogas plants models are available in a variety of models and sizes to choose from. These include fixed dome models and floating dome models. In fixed dome model plants, a balancing tank is installed at the outlet to control the pressure in the plants. The slurry after treatment from the plant comes out through an opening on one side of the tank. Mosquitoes can also enter the balancing tank through this area and propagate by laying eggs on the surface of the processed slurry which gets collected in the balancing tank. A plant owner cannot usually understand this. This is because the outside of the balancing tank is lined with cement slabs so the spread of mosquitoes cannot be detected easily.
There are two types of floating dome model biogas plants. These are, with water jacket and without water jacket. In models without water jacket, the gas collector is mounted on the center pipe inside the digester. In water jacket model plants, a special chamber is constructed between the outer wall of the digester and the chamber where the waste gets filled, this chamber is filled with water and the gas collector is mounted in this water. Biogas is found to be released into the atmosphere on a large scale from the slurry which gets collected in the pressure controller tank in fixed dome model plants and in limited quantities through the sides of a floating dome model plant and from areas where the slurry is visible on the outside. This needs to be controlled to protect the environment. Preventing such biogas leaks can make biogas plants more environmentally friendly.
The ULTRA model biogas plant was developed as a result of research conducted by a research team led by Dr A Sajidas, the founder of BIOTECH INDIA to design a biogas plant that is more suitable and environmentally friendly by preventing the spread of methane from biogas plants, controlling the growth of mosquitoes and resolving the pressure drop in the flame when biogas is used for cooking.
If a biogas plant should be free from mosquitoes, the basic principle is that there should be no open parts with stagnant water in the plant. For this, a synthetic gas collector was attached at the top of the digesters in the existing floating dome model biogas plants and it was designed in such a way that it had greater gas storage capacity than the floating dome fiber glass model biogas plants. In plants of this model, the gas collector was mounted on hooks attached at equal intervals in the fiber glass digesters. If biogas more than the storage capacity of the gas collector gets collected it will lead to high pressure inside the gas collector and cause the gas collector to rupture. To avoid this, a safety device adjusting it in case of high pressure was also attached in the digester.
The biogas stored in the gas collector made of geo-membrane plastic must be pressurized if it has to reach the utility point. For this purpose a pressure control unit was also attached on top of the gas collector.
